Congratulations to Lauren Rutherford, recipient of the IAFHMS Derek Eaves Research Grant!

We’re very proud to announce Lauren Rutherford is the recipient of the Derek Eaves Student Research Grant from the International Association of Forensic Mental Health Services (IAMFHS) for the project Healthcare in Correctional Facilities: Perspectives of Women with Criminal Justice Involvement on Gender-Specific Care!

This study is an extension of a larger project evaluating correctional health services in British Columbia (BC) following the transfer of responsibility for healthcare governance in provincial correctional centres to the Ministry of Health in 2017. The extension will explore women’s experiences of healthcare in provincial correctional centres in BC through semi-structured qualitative interviews. The perspectives of women with living and lived experience of incarceration should be considered to ensure changes to practice and policy are responsive to their needs. The findings will inform recommendations to correctional healthcare leadership to improve gender-specific care for women in correctional centres.

The Derek Eaves Student Research Grant is awarded by the IAFMHS to two students annually to support student research. The award is in honour of the central role Dr. Derek Eaves played in research related to Forensic Mental Health. Yay Lauren!
